Throughout the existence of the Black American Dad Foundation, we have made connections with fathers around the country.They have shown us and told us what fatherhood means to them. The meaning of fatherhood has deepened for me as I’ve aged and grown alongside my children. While everyone’s journey is unique, this is my personal experience.
In my early days as a young father, I believed fatherhood was primarily about being present and showing love and guidance to my children. However, as time has passed and I have encountered both the highs and lows, I’ve come to understand that true fatherhood encompasses more than presence, affection, and guidance. It also requires a steadfast commitment to facing any adversity for the betterment of my children and their lives.

I’ve long acknowledged that my kids are the coolest thing about me. They are smart, funny, thoughtful, resilient, and a host of other qualities that I didn’t come close to possessing until early adulthood. It’s a small trade-off to have my last nerve constantly hanging on by a thread if it means I’m putting them in a position to have a positive impact on this world. Black American Dad has been a blessed reminder that I am neither unique nor special, and that there are plenty of us doing this on the daily.
